UMS Talk: Kevin Knudson, "Fujimoto approximation"

Abstract: If I ask you to fold a strip of paper in half, it’s no problem. Into fourths? Eighths? Also no problem. But what about fifths, or sevenths, or nineteenths? In this talk I will demonstrate Fujimoto’s approximation method for doing this and prove to you why it works. This opens up a lot of interesting mathematical questions related to binary decimal expansions, discrete dynamics, and multiplication modulo n.
October 144PM-5PMLIT221
UMS Talk: The Yamabe Problem by Lei Zhang

Abstract: The Yamabe problem is one of the most well-known problems in Geometric Analysis. It is stated as a geometric question and interpreted as a PDE existence problem. Surprisingly, the final resolution of the Yamabe problem is deeply involved with the celebrated Positive Mass Theorem in General Relativity. The Yambe problem has caused tremendous impact in geometric analysis and PDE and the ties among various fields of Mathematics and Physics have been greatly strengthened. In this talk I will describe how the problem was solved and some recent significant results. No profound training in Geometric analysis or PDE is required to attend the talk.

UMS Talk: Henry Adams, "Fair division"

Abstract: Suppose five roommates need to pay $3,000 dollars of rent per month for their five-bedroom apartment. The five bedrooms are not equivalent: one is bigger, one is smaller, one has more windows, one is closer to the kitchen, one is painted neon green. So it is not necessarily fair to have each room cost the same amount. Furthermore, each roommate has a different opinion on the relative desirability of each room. How should the roommates fairly divide the rent between the rooms to cover the $3,000 apartment total, and how should they decide who gets which room? I will describe how Sperner's lemma, related to combinatorics and topology, can be used to find a fair division of rent. This talk will survey the New York Times article "To Divide the Rent, Start With a Triangle" by Albert Sun (https://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/29/science/to-divide-the-rent-start-with-a-triangle.html), and the paper "Rental Harmony: Sperner's Lemma in Fair Division" by Francis Su.

UMS Talk: Convexity, Hyperplanes and Data - Hubert Wagner

Abstract:
The goal of this talk is to provide intuition on certain non-Euclidean geometries.
To shed some light on them, we'll use basic tools from convex analysis and affine geometry. Then, I'll try to convince you that such musings are useful in data science, especially in modern machine learning.
