Abstract: In this talk, I will introduce the classification problem for compact 3-manifolds and pictorially describe its recent resolution by the mysterious and reclusive Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman. Among other things, Perelman’s work implies the celebrated Poincare’ conjecture (stated back in 1904).
